CDL Bi-Axial Oriented Polystyrene Lines

CDL has become a leading supplier of biaxial orientation equipment. CDL’s sequential, fast stretch and transverse biaxial orientation machines are available for a list of material that includes, but is not limited to, Polypropylene, Polyoxymethylene; Fluoropolymers such as polyvinylidene fluoride and PTFE, HDPE, blends of Polyphenylene oxide and many more.

Expert machine engineering that delivers a superior plastic film. Advanced computer system controls and regulates oven temperatures, stretcher speed, extruder pressure and tension on winder system.

Machine Direction Orientation Unit (MDO)

CDL is a custom manufacturer-designer of specialty process lines for film and sheet extrusion. As with our extruders, CDL’s MDO and TDO equipment is designed and built to help increase productivity and decrease downtime. Thereby making you more competitive in today’s growing marketplace.

Pressurized plastic melt flows through a sheet die and is cast onto CDL’s machine Direction Orienter or MDO. Cast thickness may vary from 0.020 to 0.200. The unoriented sheet begins to cool on the roll calendering stack. The following rolls stabilize the sheet surface temperature and allow time for inner sheet temperature balance. The nip controls simultaneous rolling and stretching at optimum orientation temperature. The final two rolls may be used for heat setting and/or cooling uniaxially stretched polymeric sheet. CDL MDO’s are built for continuous 24-hour production, and available in various standard and custom sizes to meet specific job requirements.

Transverse Direction Orientation Unit (TDO)

To further enhance the quality of the plastic film or sheet, CDL designs a co-extrusion biaxial system with capability of up to 9-layer construction, which will produce stronger, thinner film with barrier properties if required. After the film passes through the MDO, it enters the TDO, (Transverse Direction Orienter), where it is stretched across the film. This forces the molecular structure to line up in such a way as to further strengthen the film, both tensile and impact. In the TDO tentering frame process, the polymer chains are aligned perpendicular to the Machine Direction axis. CDL’s medium duty center-pull clips or heavy duty forged clips grip the sheet on either side and convey it through an IR oven as the sheet stretches. CDL heavy-duty clips withstand up to 300 PL. CDL infrared ovens are constructed of tubular steel with multiple cross support beams to allow maximum heating and cooling control. Temperature is carefully regulated with a traversing scanner mounted midway through the Transiton section. Infrared sensors also monitor thermal radiation at this point. Oven lengths vary from 35-45 ft., and a CDL oven may be customized to meet specific requirements.

Computer Line Control

The command center for CDL’s biaxial orientation line is a unique automated process control unit. The system incorporates alarm processing and detection a color graphic interface centers for report trending. Optional functions include historian fail over, control and MODBUS sub systems. If required, additional selections are also available. Together these features allow for the most effective and total control for your biaxial line. CDL custom designs full electronic monitoring for more accurate material specifications. CDL includes every thing from temperature control and line speed to the surface finish of the rolls. Plus when you consider CDL’s electrical engineering team some of the brightest minds in the industry who specialize in the design of controls for processing lines, it’s no wonder CDL is the leading producer of technically advanced MDO ant TDO equipment.

Today, more than ever before the market for advanced plastic film is in high demand which is why CDL design biaxial equipment that can process most all polymers and co-polymers. CDL will give you complete flexibility, accurate control, and high production rate and low unit cost.

CDL will design a biaxial section to meet your required specifications. Although most manufactures of film operating nine speeds from 30 fpm to 400 FPM, CDL stretchers are designed for 750 FPM which means all the safety possible under today’ manufacturing conditions is incorporated into the design. In addition, all Crown machines are built for continuous 24-hour operation. For development purposes of biaxial co-extrusion. CDL offers complete production laboratory facilities in Addison, IL.
